Port Equipment Manufacturers Association sees membership expand further with three new members

March 25, 2010 – The Port Equipment Manufacturers Association (PEMA) continues its steady expansion with the addition of three new members; load measurement technologies innovator, Lasstec, cables and energy systems group, Prysmian and port management systems producer, Visy.
“We welcome our three new members and anticipate working closely with them in our ongoing efforts to develop industry-wide best practice in key spheres such as safety and sustainability,” says Ottonel Popesco, PEMA President.
PEMA provides a forum and public voice for the global port equipment and technology sectors, reflecting their critical role in enabling safe, secure, sustainable and productive ports and thereby supporting world maritime trade.
With more than 20 years’ experience in the container handling industry, Lasstec designs and manufactures innovative load measurement technologies, such as its twist-lock load sensing system, that allows ports to weigh containers during the handling cycle thus reducing the risk of accidents.
Established in 1897, the Prysmian Group designs innovative solutions for power transmission and distribution infrastructures; from extremely high to low voltage, a broad range of fibre-optic and copper telecom cables and systems suitable for all types of voice, video and data transmission.
Finland’s Visy produces high-performance, automated management and security systems for ports and terminals around the world. Visy systems, including its Optical Character Recognition (OCR), scan, capture, store, recognise and verify information on people, vehicles and cargo movements.
PEMA members also met recently at the TOC Asia, held between March 16 and 18 in Shanghai, for an interactive workshop entitled Safety in Terminal Operations & Equipment. Hosted by Popesco and featuring a panel of industry experts, the workshop covered some of the most critical safety and loss prevention issues currently facing port and terminal operators.
Subjects tackled included how terminals can mitigate storm damage, building a safety culture and developing appropriate key performance indicators, understanding and addressing the
major causes of accidents and loss, building safety into the equipment procurement process - setting a minimum safety standard for quay crane specifications and how new technologies can improve equipment safety.
PEMA members are due to next meet at the TOC Europe Conference & Exhibition in Valencia, June.
